Cassander is a doppelganger, one of a small group of engineered, immortal, face-stealing employees of a company named Cathedra. Cathedra accepts assassination petitions from any person in any of the planes of existence against any target; if your petition is granted, your target of choice will be killed by a doppelganger sent by Cathedra.
Doppelgangers must have the majority of their memories wiped every one hundred years, or they begin to malfunction mentally and magically. After being memorywiped several times, Cassander went on the run and has survived for five hundred more years while pursued by Cathedra and his fellow doppelgangers. He travels the planes as a freelance killer, and as a result of not having been memorywiped for so long, he's hugely prone to malfunction.
